Story
Serving a population of nearly 8.2 million people, the Archive is a pan-regional resource of approximately 75,000 reels of film, video, and digital content, capturing life in Yorkshire and the North East over the past 135 years.
The items in the Collection are unique, one-of-a-kind items, never to be repeated. At the heart of the Collection are films made by, and for, local people. They reflect the diversity of our communities and reveal a strong sense of place and regional identity in a way only moving images can.
The films contain many aspects of life in the region from the 1890s to the present day: amazing landscapes, rich industrial heritage, and the social history of its people, from coast to country and stretching from Sheffield to the Scottish Borders — all documented by amateur and professional filmmakers alike.
The Archive is strongly committed to working with filmmakers and communities to identify, preserve, and create access to film heritage collections made in and about our regions. We will continue to collect significant, engaging, and representative collections – but we need your help to continue this vital work!
How can you help?
Every film in the Archive tells a different story of Yorkshire and the North East, but there are still so many stories waiting to be revealed. Time is running out! These original materials may already be deteriorating, and without crucial conservation and preservation work, they will be lost forever.
Your support can make a lasting difference. By donating, you're helping safeguard our regions' film heritage to ensure that this remarkable Collection continues to be preserved, celebrated, and made accessible for many generations to come.
