At Unlocked Graduates, we recruit, train and challenge outstanding individuals to lead prisoner rehabilitation with the aim of creating high-performing leaders who will break the cycles of reoffending in prisons and throughout society.
In England and Wales today, nearly half of adults (44%) that leave prison today will be reconvicted within a year and this statistic rises to 63% for those serving sentences of less than 12 months. This reoffending rate is estimated to cost the UK £18.1 billion every year.
Whatever your views on criminal justice, whether you see prison as a place to punish and deter future crime or to actively rehabilitate, prisons are failing.
Unlocked aims to change this. Prison officers have more contact with prisoners than any other professionals, and so have the power to make a real difference. Unlocked wants innovative leaders to join the prison service; to bring fresh thinking and new ideas to reform prisons; and help prisoners make better, more positive choices and prepare for life outside prison. Since 2017, we have placed over 600 prison officers in 37 prisons across England and Wales in both adult and youth estate. We now work in a quarter of public prisons in England and reach a third of the prison population.
Our core programme is funded by statutory income. However, we rely on donations and philanthropy to pilot new ideas and test new innovative approaches to rehabilitation. Over the last 12 months fundraised income has allowed us to:
- Deliver over 30 Innovation projects designed and delivered by prison officers and impacting over 2,000 prisoners
- Launch an ambassador network that will work collectively to drive change in prisons
- Provide opportunities for prison officers to share best practice internationally, hear from world class speakers and develop their skills beyond the frontline
