Story
On Monday 6th February, two devastating 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck in Türkiye and Syria.
The damages have been devastating. Latest reports estimate that nearly 37,000 people have died, making it the world's deadliest earthquake disaster in over a decade, and numbers are still expected to rise significantly as the search and rescue efforts continue. Thousands of buildings have collapsed, leaving people homeless in the freezing winter conditions as the aftershocks continue to rumble on.
The situation is exacerbated by numerous existing vulnerabilities, such as the large number of displaced people in the region and health systems on the brink of collapse.
RedR UK is already present in the Middle East and has been delivering training on Structural Detailing and Damage Assessments in Syria, focusing on supporting structural engineers and construction specialists to assess damage to infrastructure, repair damaged buildings and retrofit to build future resilience against earthquakes.
RedR UK works to bring valuable technical expertise to humanitarian crises. With your support we will continue to utilise our presence in the region to provide technical expertise where we can. Please donate now.
This appeal will continue to develop as our understanding of the situation grows.
