Story
WellWater's 2020 sports event is The School Walk Challenge and it aims to raise £60K to go towards our sustainable School Project in Koma Hills, Nigeria, changing over 25,000 children lives.
In rural Nigeria poverty is an underlying factor as a whole, people living in rural areas live below a dollar daily. Having travelled to Koma Hills which is located in the North East of Nigeria. The sight of educational facilities is disheartening. From broken classroom walls to opened roofs, damaged chalkboards, lack of infrastructure which the majority of rural schools are poorly built, other educational facilities such as chairs and tables are usually not sufficient; libraries do not exist in many rural schools, the educational plight in Koma Hills calls for immediate response.
In our last trip to Nigeria in December 2019, during our stay in the village, we met a young boy named Mishak. He is an orphan, both parents passed away from cancer. His brother frequently travels to the city to work. Due to the distance from the city to the village, he doesnt see his brother frequently and when he does, it's to give Mishak's food for the week.
During our stay, Mishak didnt leave our side, he was with us at all times; collecting rocks, digging holes from the ground and materials needed for the study for the school. With the little English he knew, he helped us translate with the other children in the village. Surrounding himself with the architects, his dream now is to become an architect and help build sustainable buildings for his people in the Koma land and Africa. Among the 25,000 children in Koma also share the same life as Mishak.
Education is the most powerful tool to reduce poverty, insecurity, child labour and ensuring peace. It is why we are building a school to provide primary education and opportunities. The school project aim is to design a profoundly well-considered project that is fit for purpose including materiality, comfort and sustainability for the students.
Each day in Koma Hills, Nigeria, children like Mishak walk on average 6km to get to school. This is approximately 1600km in a school year!.
In joining us on The School Walk Challenge, you are gifting these children with the school they need to become the future leader of their generations and making their dreams come true. Every step we take we are ensuring that education gets to the doorstep of every child in Koma Hills.
