Story

Your support can ensure every NHS brain cancer patient can access the latest and greatest treatment and care.

Our ambition is that every person diagnosed with brain cancer in the UK can choose to access consistently excellent, specialist brain cancer services by the end of 2022.

The creation of a national infrastructure is ambitious, but it will allow the NHS to offer a consistent world-class standard of care for brain cancer patients and provide a working roadmap to raise the standards of NHS cancer services for all types of cancer in the future.

Appeal aims:

1. Extend and enhance lives by helping the NHS to deliver excellence as standard

2. Offer personalised medicine for NHS brain cancer patients for the first time

3. Support the latest research and innovative personalised trials in brain cancer, simplifying access for patients and freely sharing data globally

4. Start to build a highly skilled workforce, both in the NHS and in brain cancer research.

Incredible progress has been made so far through the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission but to fully realise the projects, £4 million of funding is needed.

1. Extend and enhance lives by recognising, rewarding and rolling-out excellence as standard in specialist brain cancer treatment and care. Funding needed: £540,000

2.Offer personalised, precision medicine for brain cancer patients on the NHS for the first time. Funding needed: £945,000

3.Support the latest world-class medical research and innovative personalised trials, including the ground-breaking Tessa Jowell BRAIN-Matrix trial. Funding needed: £520,000

4.Start to build a highly skilled workforce through training the next generation of healthcare and research professionals to deliver excellence for brain cancer patients and by sharing best practice throughout the NHS. Funding needed: £1,995,000

Find your place at the heart of the Tessa Jowell Foundation

As Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson once noted, Tessa had an "amazing ability to pull people together" and we are aiming to replicate this approach as part of her legacy.

Join us and play your part in making sure every brain cancer patient can access the excellent treatment and care they deserve by the end of 2022.

Im Jess Mills, Tessas daughter, CEO Founder of the Tessa Jowell Foundation. My Mum would be so proud of what we have achieved so far and how our collaborative work with neuro-oncology partners has led to the development of the "Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence".

Each project that sits within the Centre of Excellence umbrella programme is a vital part of the architecture needed to achieve consistent, equal access to excellence in NHS cancer treatment; a task that, for too long, has been put into the too difficult box.

The Centres of Excellence are the place I would want my Mum to have been treated, the place every patient and family will know they are receiving the best treatment and care there is. I don't know a single person whose life has not been affected by cancer, so while this is a mission in Mums name, it is for everybody, for every family.

Mum would often say, you can tell the best public policy through the stories of the people whose lives it will affect and I often think how my familys experience of navigating my mothers illness would have been different if we had had access to the Tessa Jowell Centres, and then I think about how, in the future, the cancer journey for many patients and their families will be transformed by them.

The human-sized picture is at the heart of every aspect of this strategy, at its core is the focus on closing the current huge inequality in access to excellence. Our mission is to ensure that excellence becomes standard for everyone diagnosed with brain cancer.

We hope you are as inspired by this programme as we have been in creating it.
