Story

HOW IT ALL STARTED

It may be fate, or it may be coincidence, but it is surely highly appropriate that the building which now houses the South London Islamic Centre should have started life some 100 years ago as a fire station.

It was then a protection and a safeguard for the local community against the threat of fire in this world; it now offers protection to the same community against the danger of fire in the Hereafter.

THE JOURNEY

By the grace of Allah, there has been a Muslim community in Streatham for almost 50 years and this community has gradually grown in number and prosperity over the years. It now contributes at every level to the general vitality of the area and to the local community.

In 1977, a group of Muslim brothers and sisters got together and rented the old fire station to use as a masjid and community centre.

In November 1989, with the help of the Muslim community, through donations and Duas, they bought the building alhamdulillah.

On Tuesday 20th March 2022, after a long struggle, lasting over 20 years, with your Duas, Lambeth Council finally granted planning permission to completely rebuild and modernise the existing facilities to meet our current requirements and those of our future generations alhamdulillah.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES AT THE CENTRE

The principal activities of the centre are the advancement of the religion of Islam and the education of Muslim children in accordance with the teachings of Quran and Sunnah. Other activities include the relief of poverty, the provision of funeral services to the Muslim community, and the provision of facilities for community development in the South London area. Brothers and Sisters are therefore provided with the following facilities:

· Daily congregational Salahs

We currently cater for the five daily salah.

· Jummah

SLIC hold 2 Jummah salahs every Friday to accommodate attendees.

· Eid Day Salah & Celebration

SLIC hold Eid Salahs on both Eid ul Fitr & Eid ul Adha. They provide refreshments & sweets for the community as well as having hosted Eid Events for children.

· Youth Network

The centre holds youth nights fortnightly, allowing 9-29 year olds to attend the masjid to socialise and enjoy themselves playing ping pong, football or other activities followed by a meal together before leaving with an Islamic reminder and open Q&A session to ask anything that concerns them - without fear of being judged.

· Taraweeh & Tahajjud / Qiyamul Layl

The centre conducts Taraweeh prayers every Ramadhan as well as Tahajjud prayers. We host local huffadh as well as prominent reciters from abroad, such as Sheikh Ahmed Rajab.

· Itikaaf

The centre facilitates members of the community to carry out itikaaf during the last ten days of Ramadhan.

· Hosting & Accommodating Travelling Muslims (Tablighi Jamat)

The centre hosts & accommodates travelling Muslims in the Dawah scene, including Tablighi Jamat.

· Guest Imams & Lectures

The centre has arranged for visits by a number of popular guest imams, including Abdul Rahman Al-Ossi, Sheikh Ahmad Ragab, Sheikh Muhammad Haruna Bukenya, Sheikh Saad Nomani and others.

· Community Iftars

During the month of Ramadhan, the centre provides Iftar to the community.

· FREE Janazah services

The centre is one of few centres / masjids in London to currently offer Janazah services to the community free of charge. This includes collection of the deceased, Ghusl/ Washing Rites, Kafan & preparing for burial, Janazah Salah and transport to/from the Familys’ chosen cemetery.

· Madrasah & Hifdh Classes (Weekdays & Weekend)

The centre hosts weekday madrasah classes for girls and boys aged 5-18 including Hifdh of the Quran.

· Exercise Classes

The centre currently supports exercise classes for sisters, which it looks to further extend to accommodate brothers as well.

· Nikah Services

The centre accommodates Nikah services to bring together Muslims wishing to complete half their deen.

· Consult an Imam Services

The centre provides a service where the community can contact imams to discuss any issues and take advice.

· Community Gatherings

The centre has facilities available to host community gatherings for various occasions.

· Interfaith Meetings

The centre is heavily involved in trying to bridge the gap in the community between the faiths groups to build understanding and tolerance of each other.

· Foodbank

The masjid accommodates a weekly foodbank where the community can come and receive support.

· Clothes Bank

The masjid accommodates a clothes bank in place to collect items of clothing, etc. to provide to people in third world countries / war torn areas, such as Syria, Palestine, etc.

In addition to providing all of the current services at a greater level, with your support, the new approved plans will also allow us to provide:

HOW CAN I HELP

In order to complete phase 1 of our plans, we need to raise £5m to demolish & rebuild the masjid - core & shell so it’s watertight - and reopen the ground & first floors of the masjid so that the community can start reusing it.

Whether it’s a one-off payment or monthly payments over a 6 to 12 month period, help us build your masjid in this life whilst being rewarded with palaces in the hereafter!

Share our campaign with your network, with your friends & with your family.

Every £100, £1000 and £10,000 that you can help raise will help us achieve our goal inshaAllah.

If we can get 100 of our youngsters to take ownership of the task and try to raise £10,000 through their network - that’s £1m inshaAllah! Breaking that down, it’s the equivalent of £833 every month - £27 a day! Can you get 30 people to give £30 a month?

It may sound like a large task for one to do, but if we work together we can do it as a community, as an ummah!

Jazakallahu Khayran in advance for your support.

May Allah accept it from you, multiply it on your scales of good, take away any worry and difficulties from your life, forgive you any shortcomings & elevate your status in Jannatul Firdaws.

May it be a beloved act of yours to Allah, a benefit to the community, a continued source of good deeds, an action that brings your more goodness and success than you could ever imagine, both in this life and the hereafter.

Ameen Allah humma Ameen.
