Preserving 900 Years of Balcombe History
There has been a Church on the site in Balcombe from 1090 AD. The current Church is Grade 1 listed, with the South aisle dating from the late 13th/14th century and the Bell Tower from the 15th century. The Central (Nave) and North aisles are Victorian, from the 1850-75 period. In it's long history, the Church has even hosted royalty, Queen Mary (and the 5 year old Princess Elizabeth, as a bridesmaid) at the 1931 wedding of Lady May Cambridge.
A recent architectural review, informed by the partial fall of plaster in the Lady Chapel ceiling, identified an urgent need to address serious water damage to the Church roof, walls and interior. We also needed to make the Church weather-secure to preserve it for the christenings, weddings, funerals and services of future generations.
The work is now finished and was extensive, it well in excess of £250,000, in two large phases (exterior and interior). We are now in the process of paying off the various loans that were taken to allow the work to happen. All donations towards repairing and preserving this key part of the community are greatly welcomed and appreciated.
