The campaign has now expired but it's not too late to support this charity.
Visit the charity's profileSt Machar's Cathedral requires your generous support to ensure we can complete our planned renovations. We need your help to raise the final £72K of our £1.85M project. You could buy a slate for £10 or clean a shield on the heraldic ceiling for £500. National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and many other grant funding bodies have already donated to the project as have our congregation and members of the Aberdeenshire community, so we are almost there.
St Machars Cathedral is a church of great architectural, artistic and historical interest to many people from the UK and worldwide. Our renovation project will ensure that the building will continue to serve the wider community for generations to come. The roof is leaking and is being re-slated for the first time since 1867. Our unique 500-year-old oak ceiling with 48 brightly coloured heraldic shields will be cleaned and renovated. Our leaded windows will be sympathetically restored and cleaned.
St Machars is a working church open every day of the year attracting 27,000 visitors in addition to a worshiping congregation. Some people will come to admire the building, light a candle for a friend or family member, for a moment of peace and reflection in a busy day, or to attend a service. Everyone will find a warm welcome at St Machars.
Keep an eye on our website www.stmachar.com for photographs and updates on the project. Our education and outreach officers are developing activities linked to the project, new education programmes for all ages will be rolled out over the next year.
