Career Ready

Shona McKenzie Memorial Fund

It would have been Shona's wish for any donations raised, that they would be allocated to support a young person or number of young people to receive a life-changing paid internship on the Career Ready programme.

Story

It could be said that Shona never stopped working in her career helping people find their true vocation in life. But, likewise in her friendships, a guiding light, a nudge in the right direction and sometimes a shove, when we weren't listening properly, Shona cared about us all and wanted us to be the best versions of ourselves.

When we think of Shona and how we may pay-it-forward we are drawn to the stories and tributes shared since her passing and the overwhelming gratitude that people had for her support, advice, counsel and friendship.

We were all lucky to have a Shona to guide and mentor us all, but so many others do not. One of Shona's true passions, celebrated in her work across many businesses and highlighted with Commonwealth Games was her support, help and advice to the younger people starting their careers and working lives. Advice with CVs, interviews, using her connections to make introductions and also giving many of them a start or lift up in their career by taking them into her own team.

It was not only in her business role that this passion for supporting younger people evolved. For many years Shona played a committed part with charity Career Ready, as an employer and directing other businesses to get involved and give their support. Career Ready supports 1,000s of young people every year. Specifically working with young people aged 15-17 who come from socially challenged backgrounds and matches them with business mentors who take them on a transformational 2-year journey.

In 2020 alone, Career Ready helped over 1,300 young people and it aims to expand bringing in more regions, schools and students whose lives are genuinely changed because of the experience it creates.

Career Ready are deeply touched that we thought of them in Shona's memory. It would have been Shona's wish for any donations raised, that they would be allocated to support a young person or number of young people to receive a life-changing paid internship on the Career Ready programme.

Even more fitting is that they would like to create an award in Shona's name that will help a young person from the Glasgow region prepare for their entry into the world of work though a prize fund to be spent on technology, dress-code, study materials and the like. This award being be presented at their Annual Graduation Ceremony in March of each year.

Shona's family and Career Ready Scotland would be delighted for any donations to this fantastic charity. Thank you for your time and support.
