SOS Mantay

The coronavirus crisis threatens to close Casa Mantay. Its usual sources of funding have dried up, which places this refuge for young mothers and their babies at risk of shutting down. We need your support now more than ever. Thank you

Story

Hi, I'm Lina, I'm 12 years old and 20 days ago I gave birth to my daughter, Flor Margarita, at Casa Mantay. My little one was in a hurry to be born and suprised us first thing in the morning. Luckily, everything went well and after the birth, we were able to travel to the hospital, escorted by the police given the state of emergency we're currently in. My baby was born in Casa Mantay, where I live with other young mothers and their babies, and in Mantay I've been able to discover what 'home' means: a family and security for the future. Unfortunately, all this is about to disappear: because of the grave crisis triggered by COVID-19, Mantay runs the risk of having to close

The economic situation is not sustainable. Food costs and the price of basic necessities have shot up due to the pandemic. Our artesan workshop, thanks to which we've been able to earn a stable income, has had to close. Its functioning depends on tourism, and who knows when that will return...

We know that the situation is challenging all across the world, that people are suffering and that this is not a good moment to be asking for help, but Casa Mantay exists because, in the darkest moments, friends have always appeared to support us, with resources and with hope.

If you don't know us, Casa Mantay offers a place a safe haven to teenage mums and their babies who have suffered abuse or rejection by their families. Some of the mums are as young as 12, and became pregnant due to being raped in their own homes. Shutting down Casa Mantay would mean they face life on the streets, or returning to situations of abuse. We can't let that happen.

We need you help now more than ever in order to stabilise the finances of Casa Mantay and be able to ensure its survival.

In these difficult moments, of fear and suffering, of having to stay in our homes, we have just one wish: to stay at home - to stay at Mantay.

It costs £5,676 to keep Casa Mantay open for a month. Anything you can spare will help.

Thank you
