Roundhegians is used by over 480 playing members ranging from ages 5 to 76. An amazing amount of talent has passed through our gates over the years. Its a place where anyone is welcome, a special part of our community that we simply don't want to lose, and we've now got to the point where costly renovations are critical to the longer-term survival of our club.
Our 40-year-old sports hall roof has deteriorated badly and now needs replacing. This is a threat to our current Badminton players, to members of the Karate Club and to other community groups that hire the hall. Along with replacing the roof, we need to install a new ventilation system and redecorate.
We have set aside some funds towards a project that we estimate will cost in the region of £100,000, but we need to ask for your help to raise at least £40,000 to contribute to the project.
We know its a big ask, but we hope that support is out there!
As a Community Amateur Sports Club, we provide playing facilities for Rugby Union and Badminton members, and for Leeds Shotokan Karate Club, our long-standing associate club. All sports have senior and junior members. We also provide occasional training facilities for a junior Rugby League club, for GAA Gaelic Football club, for Leeds Ultimate Frisbee Club and for Schools Sports Coaching sessions.
The Roundhegians Rugby Football Club was established in 1928 by former pupils of Roundhay School, who first used a municipal pitch near Soldiers Field. When the Second World War broke out many Old Boys enlisted in the armed forces. 88 of them died on active service.
Some of the survivors raised funds to create The Memorial Ground. They bought 4.5 acres of land deemed not fit for residential development, levelled what is now our first team pitch, built a small clubhouse and planted 88 saplings, one for each life sacrificed. A subsequent donation from the Wood family, whose daughter was tragically killed in a road accident on Street Lane, provided a further 4 acres of land to create the second pitch in 1963. In 1980 the Howarth Sports Hall was added - the roof of which is the focus of our crowdfunding campaign.
