Story

In 2020, during his year as President of the Rotary club of Worcester, Richard walked 97 miles to raise money for local charities impacted by Covid. This year he will be walking, kayaking and cycling the entire length of the River Severn with his companion, Ian Pickering, a friend at Bromyard Road Methodist Church.

They are starting on Monday 6 September and estimate it will take around nine days to complete.

Young people are our future and they have been badly impacted in the last 18 months. So the money raised will be shared equally between Action for Children & Worcestershire Young Carers.

Action for Children: Our vision is that every child and young person has a safe and happy childhood, and the foundations they need to thrive. We act by Intervention, Prevention and Advocacy putting children at the heart of everything we do. That includes our mission to protect and support children and young people. We do this by providing practical and emotional care and support. We make sure their voices are heard. And we campaign to bring lasting improvements to their lives. Our values are being passionate about all children having a safe and happy childhood. Ambitious for children and young people. They are also inclusive and strive to ensure that all children are included. For more information about Action for Children visit their website: Website

YSS Worcestershire Young Carers: We support young people aged between 7 and 25 who have a caring responsibility for a family member at home. Typically this is for a parent or sibling with physical or mental health needs, a disability or with dependency issues. Young carers often have limited life changes, are more likely to be bullied and will regularly struggle with the demands of school. Furthermore, due to the demands of their home life, they often miss out on all of the things that typical children take for granted (spending time with friends, trips away and holidays for example). YSS WYC supports young carers by offering them information, advice and guidance, respite opportunities in the form of groups and trip, and 1-1 sessions to help them balance the other demands of being a young person, with the ongoing responsibility of their care role. We help them to feel valued and proud of their role and ensure that other organisations are aware that they exist. Our work is holistic and we take a multi-agency approach in delivering the best outcomes for our young people. For more information about YSS Young Carers their website: Website

We will be posting regular updates on the challenge on social media and by email. If you would like to be on our email list, please contact info@rotaryworcester.org
