Story

The RNLIs Lifeboat Station at Sennen Cove in Cornwall suffered considerable damage when its roof was blown off during Storm Eunice.

The local community have provided outstanding help to the Sennen Cove volunteers and the RNLIs staff in managing to ensure that the stations lifeboats were operational again with in 24 hours of the initial incident.

Initial works are underway to ensure that the building is watertight and secure ensuring that our RNLI volunteers can continue their essential lifesaving work. In the long-term work will be carried out to replace the roof so ensuring that the crew can continue then stations 168 year history of protecting those who use the waters off the Landsend peninsula.

As with many lifeboat stations and other RNLI buildings in exposed locations, the Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station is not insured and so we will have to fund the repairs from charitable funds. While this may seem strange, it is actually much more cost-effective for the RNLI to self-insure ie to pay for repairs ourselves on the rare occasions they are required, rather than pay large annual insurance premiums to cover around 1000 RNLI buildings and structures. This is not unusual among other charities and public sector organisations who, like the RNLI, have a large number of buildings to manage. The RNLI does though have Public Liability Insurance to cover any 3rd party liability.

The appeal has been launched to offer people the opportunity to contribute towards the overall cost of the repairs, which in turn will help reduce the impact on the charities reserves and so ensure that the charity can fund its future long-term projects.

If people would like to help contribute to the cost of these repairs this can be done by either donate to this page by clicking on the Give Now button or by creating your own fundraising page by clicking on the Start Fundraising button.
