Story

Pirates Vs. Cancer is a one-of-a-kind event that unites ECU students and staff behind a common goal: empowering children to beat cancer and improving the lives of kids battling deadly cancers right here in eastern North Carolina. Last year, due to COVID-19, the event was transitioned to an entirely virtual platform with continued fundraising and participants shaving their heads and cutting their hair from home. This year, we are fortunate enough to hold an in-person event again! Pirates Vs. Cancer will be hosting their 5th annual event on April 23rd, 2021. We will be taking all of the precautions necessary to keep our participants and volunteers safe, including social distancing, masks, and frequent sanitizing and hand hygiene. The event will also have a virtual component on Facebook Live in order for our friends, families, and pediatric patients and their families to get involved and watch from home! More details regarding this virtual aspect will be included on our social media platforms at a later date. In addition to the live virtual aspect, we encourage our supporters from outside of Greenville, NC to stand in solidarity with these brave children by shaving their heads and cutting their hair, then sharing pictures and videos that we will play during the day of our event. We are very excited to begin planning and fundraising for this years event on April 23rd to support the children battling cancer here in Greenville at James and Connie Maynard Childrens Hospital. You can follow our progress on our social media pages, and we thank you in advance for your support and helping us raise awareness for pediatric cancer.

Founded by a few ECU Brody School of Medicine students in 2017, Pirates Vs. Cancer is now one of the largest and fastest growing interdisciplinary student organizations on the ECU Health Sciences Campus. Our leadership and participants are composed of students, faculty, and staff from the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences, and the Undergraduate campus. Since the inaugural fundraiser in 2017, we have raised over $85,000 thanks to the selfless actions of over 60 shavees and hair donors. In 2018, we were recognized as Outstanding Event of the Year by ECUs Student Activities and Organizations. Now partnered with the Vidant Health Foundation, theres no limit to what we can achieve together as Pirates Vs. Cancer!
