Story
Nigeria's government recently acknowledged that the country has the highest number of children out of school in the world. It says there are 10.5 million children not being educated, 40% of these are in Southern Nigeria, which is where text books in English are most needed.
Primary school enrollment has increased in recent years, but net attendance is only about 70%..
Southern Nigeria has free education but has a lack of basic facilities, for example toilet infrastructure, facilities, and classrooms are overburdened. Our work focuses primarily Southern Nigeria because in Northern Nigeria, Muslim families are not keen to have a Western Education because of their religious beliefs, which is why so many children are kept home. Gender equity in education is a huge issue, with girls being married very early and expected to stay home. Despite this, our partners in the Nigerian Government are keen to address this, and fully equip schools. We have already delivered over 500,000 books and we are ready to donate another 500,000, which means raising around £100,000 from our supporters to send 10 crates of books to Nigeria.
The adult literacy rate across Nigeria is just 41% of women and 61% of men that are literate.Giving children an education and access to books not only radically changes their literacy outcomes, but encourages them to stay in school.
