NOTE TO DONORS: Please scroll all the way down to see teams listed on the right hand side of the page. Using the "Give Now" link will NOT associate your donation with a specific team!
For complete competition guidelines and instructions visit the Bird-a-thon webpage: https://www.gbbo.org/birdathon2023. Once you register, your name will be listed as a fundraiser, on the right side of this page, and the team you create will be listed below that with the rest of the teams.
In 2020, Great Basin Bird Observatory, with the support of partners and friends, hosted the 1st annual Nevada Bird-a-thon. The concept of the bird-a-thon is like a typical walk-a-thon fundraiser, where teams or individuals collect pledges for either a lump sum or a per bird donation.
Every year since, Nevada birders have gathered for the Bird-a-thon. Some birders compile a backyard checklist for the 2-week duration of the event. Other birders go out for a Big Day, to see as many species in a single 24-hour period as possible. Other participants can compete in the carbon-conscious category, in which they travel by public transportation and their own muscles to complete a Big Day. How ever participants decide to compete, they have a great time getting outdoors and watching birds!
Using funds raised from the Nevada Bird-a-thon, Great Basin Bird Observatory has developed the Pinyon Jay conservation hub. This is a community science-based initiative, that allows people from any location to collect and submit data to a globally accessible database. Not only is this really nifty, but Pinyon Jays are of critical conservation concern. Check out the Hub: https://pinyon-jay-community-science-gbbo.hub.arcgis.com/
With a rate of population decline of 4-4.7% per year, the Pinyon Jay is one of the most rapidly declining songbirds in the western United States. In 2022, they were petitioned to be listed under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Since 1968, the global population of Pinyon Jays has declined by over 50%, and Nevada is home to the core of the current world population. Great Basin Bird Observatorys community science initiative will be critical to the global conservation effort for Pinyon Jays. Using these data, the Great Basin Bird Observatory can help land managers act on behalf of this rapidly declining iconic species.
At the end of the event, all checklists are tallied and prizes are awarded to the winners at awards ceremonies (one for northern NV and one for southern NV). In 2022, we coupled a collaborative beer-release! Flight of the Pinyon Jay IPA, by Pigeon Head brewery and Great Basin Bird Observatory donated $1 from every 4-pack sale to Pinyon Jay conservation and research.
Our specific goal for 2023 is to raise $10,000 to support the research of Great Basin Bird Observatory. Sponsorship can take the form of a donation towards the overhead costs of supporting the Bird-a-thon, or prizes that will be awarded to participants. All donations are fully tax deductible.
