Story
Manchester City Coach, Jamie Carr, is set to take on the challenge of a lifetime, facing two extreme challenges in support of City in the Community and Cancer Fund for Children.
This year Jamie is set to row 3000 nautical miles alone and unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean and complete the Marathon Des Sables (MDS) a 250km ultra-marathon through the Sahara Desert.
Jamie will face these two monumental challenges in support of CITCs new mental health project City Thrive, and Cancer Fund for Children, who support children and their families following a cancer diagnosis, back in Jamies home of Ireland. The proceeds raised from Jamies colossal challenges will be split evenly to both charities.
Jamie has worked with Man City Academy teams for four years. Though having coached some of the very best Academy players at Man City, it was his experience teaching children in rural India where his ambition to champion opportunities for disadvantaged children first took root, inspiring Jamies incredible next steps and fundraising efforts.
CITY IN THE COMMUNITY
In support of CITC, Jamie is directly raising funds for CITCs new City Thrive project, help to improve the lives of thousands of young people in the Manchester area.
City Thrive harnesses the power of football to help provide support for thousands of people. A dedicated team has developed a new mental health curriculum, blending specially adapted football sessions with one-to-one mentoring and group workshops on mental health awareness, to improve mental wellbeing.
City Thrive was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the long-term impact on childrens mental health was highlighted as a major concern amongst carers and parents.
CANCER FUND FOR CHILDREN
As well as CITC, Jamie is also fundraising for the Cancer Fund for Children, who provide much needed support to children diagnosed with cancer and their families, by offering vital therapeutic short breaks at Daisy Lodge, Co. Down.
Each month around 30 children and young people (0-24 years) are diagnosed with cancer throughout Ireland. This means every day that one family each day faces the devastating news that their child has cancer.
We can currently only provide one in seven of these families at our therapeutic centre in Newcastle Co. Down and urgently need to build a second Daisy Lodge to ensure that every family whose lives have been impacted by a childhood cancer diagnosis can benefit from emotional and social support.
A second Daisy Lodge in Cong Co. Mayo will allow us to increase the number of children and parents we support from 1,800 to 4,000, more than doubling our capacity, and helping to ensure children across Ireland dont have to face cancer alone.
Although this is a solo challenge, Jamie needs your help. Whether you're an individual or a business, every penny helps to make a difference for these incredible charities. Any and all support is extremely welcome.
