Story

Harmeny Education Trust provides care and education to children from all over Scotland who have experienced early years trauma due to abuse, neglect and severe family disruption. The impact of these early years' experiences is profound and our children struggle to manage their emotions and build positive relationships. They are often way behind with their learning and some even arrive at Harmeny without the ability to play.

Our children have been through multiple changes in their care and education before they arrive at Harmeny; many have moved 10-12 times before they reach 8 years old. At Harmeny our children are given consistent care and can discover how to be children again, to play, make friends and find fresh ways of learning that focus on their strengths.

To meet the growing needs of our children and enable us to help even more young people we have been busy raising funds to meet the £3.1 million target of our Learning for Life Appeal, to build a new Learning Hub to deliver specialist secondary vocational and skills-based learning programmes.

This enables us to extend the upper age limit of our residential and education services from 14 to 18, (until recently we could only cater for young people of 5-14 years) and also support more young people living with adversity, in Edinburgh and the surrounds, via an extended day education service. This building will also prevent yet one more traumatic transition for our young people in their early teenage years, enabling them to continue building on progress made at Harmeny with friends and adults they have grown to trust.

To help close the gap to our target we want to raise £100K in June - any support you can give is hugely appreciated. By doing this, we will be able to provide the spaces and opportunities young people, impacted by trauma and adversity need to progress towards positive destinations, such as employment, and develop key skills for independent living after leaving care.
