Story

The Jane Goodall Institute UK supports a range of community conservation programmes & chimp sanctuaries in Africa run by sister Jane Goodall Institutes. Sadly they have been impacted by the pandemic, so our 2021 Christmas Appeal is focusing on raising much needed funds for the chimpanzee sanctuary 'Chimp Eden' and protecting the critically endangered western chimpanzee in Senegal. All donations will be split 50/50 between the two projects. Thank you so much for your kind support!

Protecting the critically endangered western chimpanzee in Senegal

Some groups of chimpanzees in Senegal feature unique behavioural patterns developed to adapt themselves to this hot and dry habitat, such as getting into water pools, using caves to avoid the heat and spear-hunting of smaller primates. Our sister charity 'Instituto Jane Goodall' (the Jane Goodall Institute Spain) has developed a partnership with local communities in Senegal to support research and conservation programmes, agroforestry, food security, environmental education and ecotourism.

This valuable programme has suffered from income loss due to the pandemic as some corporate funders are no longer able to provide support. At the same time, costs have increased due to Covid 19 safety precautions in the field. 50% of the funds raised through this page will be donated by JGI UK to 'Instituto Jane Goodall' to support the protection of the critically endangered western chimpanzee in Senegal.

Chimp Eden - a sanctuary for rescued chimps

Chimp Eden run by 'the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa' rescues chimpanzees from across Africa and around the world who have survived the wild meat trade, been orphaned, sold in illegal pet markets, or used as entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs. The chimpanzees at Chimp Eden are the lucky ones, living out their lives in a risk-free environment and being provided with the necessary care to recover from the trauma they have experienced.

In addition to providing a safe haven for the rescued chimps, through educational visits and eco-tourism, this very special sanctuary helps individuals understand why wildlife and habitat conservation is so important. Before the pandemic Chimp Eden's visitor income covered much of their operational expenses but with tourist numbers still not back to pre-pandemic levels the sanctuary is in urgent need of financial support. 50% of the funds raised through this page will be donated by JGI UK to 'the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa' to help keep the sanctuary open.

-> The photo below shows three males living a safe and happy life at the sanctuary:

- Cozy was born in 1996 in a lab in the USA and was taken to Italy, where he was forced to pose for photos and do tricks for entertainment. Due to repeated beatings to the head, he sadly has brain damage - he has lived at Chimp Eden since 2006

- Zac was born in 1986 and kept kept chained to a tree outside a nightclub in Angola where visitors gave him drugs and alcohol. Zac was an alcoholic when he first arrived at the sanctuary in 2007.

- Tony was born in 2005 and was kept in a small cage with another chimp in Angola. The cage did not have a flat space to sleep on and the pair had been trapped inside for at least three years. Tony was rescued and brought to Chimp Eden in 2007.
