Story
For anyone who has walked the Inca Trail, you'll remember the gruelling 3 day trek up and down mountains to reach the famous Inca citadel Machu Picchu. You'll also remember the unfathomably fit, happy and capable porters that seemingly jog past you, grinning, to set up camp every night and provide delicious, hot cooked meals.
Typically, 86,000 people walk the Inca trail every year. Not to mention the thousands that walk the Salkantay, Lares and other Inca routes in the region. During the global Covid 19 pandemic, tourism has come to a complete standstill, leaving the Inca porters with no income and without the means of making a living.
With the travel ban to most of Latin America and Peru heading into a second lockdown, Inca porters are now heading into a second season with no income. To support those most in need, the LATA Foundation is teaming up with Amazonas Explorers to support 55 families with essential monthly food parcels. The parcels cost just £25 and provide a family with basic provisions for a month.
We are asking you to travel 25 miles, the length of the Inca Trail to support the Inca Porters. This can be walked, ran, swam, canoed, or whatever method you see fit and you have a month to complete the challenge, starting on the 1st March 2021. We ask that you reach out for sponsorship, £1 a mile, or an amount that you feel is appropriate totalling at least £25.00 to provide a minimum of one food parcel for one Inca porter and their family for one month. You can set up your own fundraising page by clicking on the 'Start Fundraising' button to the right and everything you raise will go towards the grand total on this main page.
If you don't fancy the walk, you can simply donate £25 for a food parcel to the appeal.
Our aim is to support the porters through the pandemic so they can return to the jobs they love; helping millions of people to visit one of the most iconic walking routes on earth.
