The Royal Free Hospital Children's School (RFHCS) is a community Special School for pupils aged 5 to 18. We are a leading practice school for Mental Health and Well Being.
We provide education for children who are inpatients or day patients on the paediatric wards at the Royal Free or with the CAMHS Eating Disorder Service. We also have a limited number of places on our GCSE Day School programme; for children who are not currently inpatients at the hospital but do live in the local community and would benefit from attending the school on a full or part-time, daily basis.
The School have been fortunate in having recently been given a fantastic opportunity to expand this area of the school by opening a new provision at The Hive on Finchley Road in September 2019
This will also enable our young people to access on-site support from other professional services;
personal development
health and wellbeing
sexual health advice
employment and education
substance misuse advice
assisting to access other services if appropriate
All donations received through the Happy Hive campaign will enable us to provide an environment in which our young people can flourish and be given the same opportunities as their peers in mainstream education. The school also manages the delivery of medical needs outreach teaching for the local authority, Camden. This service will also benefit from the additional space, allowing young people to be taught at The Hive instead of using public spaces such as libraries.
14% of school children have a long term medical condition and an estimated 125,000 UK children miss more than 14 school days per year meaning most hospitals have an education provision.
At RFHCS we believe that good education offers children a beneficial mental stimulus during a hospital stay. It also helps children to structure their time, and to promote the psychological well-being which is central to recovery.
With your support every child in our school can benefit from the best learning environment.
