Horatio's Garden is a national charity that creates and nurtures beautiful, accessible garden projects in NHS spinal injury centres across the UK to support the psychological and physical wellbeing of everyone affected by spinal injury. At present we have six garden projects and are due to begin work on our seventh in Belfast in January 2023. Our goal is to have a thriving garden project in all 11 NHS spinal injury centres in the UK.
Horatio's Garden Sheffield will be the charity's eighth garden project. It will be created at The Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injuries Centre, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. The spinal centre is the second largest in the UK, with 64 beds, supporting 360 in-patients, and thousands of out-patients, every year. The centre has a wide catchment area, with patients admitted from across South Yorkshire, East Midlands (except Northamptonshire), Lincolnshire, the Northern Division of East of England (Norfolk, Suffolk and North Cambridgeshire).
The garden will be designed by acclaimed design studio Harris Bugg who have won five Gold medals, two Silver Gilts and Best in Show at RHS shows including three Gold medals at Chelsea, a BALI award, and a Landscape Institute award.
Once built the charity will employ a Head Gardener and Garden Administrator to maintain the space, alongside a team of volunteers from the community. The charity will also provide a wide range of therapeutic and social activities for patients including creative sessions, music events, horticultural therapy and social gatherings.
We are thrilled that Horatio's Garden has secured funding from Project Giving Back to have a main avenue garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. The garden will be designed by Harris Bugg, and will form the starting point for the Sheffield garden, with key elements from the Chelsea garden being transported after the show to the Sheffield site, providing a lasting legacy from this monumental moment in the charity's history.
Your contribution towards the build of the Sheffield garden is so valued. It will enable us to provide essential support to everyone affected by spinal injury in Sheffield and the regions that the spinal centre serves.
Thank you.
