Harford ward is a 19-bed acute male ward located in the Glenbourne Unit at Derriford Hospital.
We help support men in mental health crisis, and with severe long-term mental health conditions.
We also support people with learning disabilities and individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, alongside a mental health diagnosis.
We aim to work with our patients to support them with their mental and physical health, provide them with the tools to promote their independence and wellbeing and enable them to recover and go on to live successfully in the community.
For many, being admitted to an acute ward and being in an unfamiliar environment can be scary and overwhelming. In order to help create a safe and positive environment to support our patients recovery, we want to transform an unused room into a calming/sensory room.
This will provide a neutral space for the gentlemen to relax, engage in therapeutic activities and offer a low stimulus environment away from the communal areas of the ward.
For this room, we are hoping to provide things such as;
- Various sensory items such as lights, tactile objects and interactive toys
- Distraction activities
- An electronic wall mounted boxing/cardio machine
- Books, journals and educational resources to help promote recovery
- Comfortable areas to sit such as bean bags and floor cushions
- Music devices
- Tactile/interactive wall mounted board
- Storage furniture
- Projector
We currently have an Amazon wish list set up which includes some of the items that would benefit our patients, but we are hoping to raise some extra money to purchase the more expensive items.
Any money we have left over from this room transformation will go towards purchasing further items for our patients such as clothing, toiletries and outdoor activities to use in our ward garden.
Thank you from all the team at Glenbourne
