Freezing cold bathrooms and icy showers aren't many people's idea of fun. The idea of dragging yourself out of your nice warm bed at 6 o/clock on a cold, dark Winter's morning just to have a shower sounds crazy for anyone of any age. Perhaps even more so when the heating is on the blink.
Perhaps you can imagine what it's like to be in your 80s, really feeling the cold and not too steady on your feet, like one of our residents who told us
It takes about 10 minutes for the water to run hot but the only way I can be sure of the water staying hot enough for long enough for me to have a shower is by getting up and into the shower really early. I may be clean but by mid-afternoon I am exhausted"
while another resident reports
I hate taking a shower now. You can never tell how long the hot water is going to last before you suddenly get caught under an icy blast. At my age a sudden shock like that to the system could give you a heart attack"
We have recently had new boilers and pumps put in, which we believed would solve the hot water problem but we have now been told that we need to install "trace heating" and a "return pipe". We need to do this as quickly as we can, before any really cold weather arrives, and ideally before Christmas.
That is precisely why we are taking part in #GivingTuesday for the first time, this year.
If we are to get this vital work completed by then, we need one mega day of fundraising so that tomorrow we can tell if we have enough in the bank to give the go-ahead to the plumbing firm that wants to do the work for us.
If you help, we can get this dodgy plumbing fixed before the cold weather really starts to bite and cause even more problems. You may know already that the College was set up in the last years of Queen Victoria's reign, but what you probably don't know is that the College's residents haven't faced a situation like this since coal was rationed during the First World War and the boilers couldn't be fired.
#GivingTuesday gives us a unique one-day window of massive potential, the potential to get this problem solved as quickly as possible for the benefit of our 60 elderly residents. You can be a part of this, to make a real difference in just one day, through #GivingTuesday.
Only you know what is right for you to give, but please do give as generously as you can on #GivingTuesday to help spare our residents the indignity of being unable to bathe and wash when they need to.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
