Good Vibrations runs communal music-making projects in prisons, but reaching people has been very hard since the beginning of the pandemic. Help us stay connected to participants and support them from a distance when we can't be with them in person.
While for many of us life is opening up again since the end of Covid restrictions, life for those in prison remains severely restricted. Although some activities have started again, prisons can still be locked down at any time in response to Covid outbreaks. Prisoners can still spend much of their days alone in their cells and often miss out on activities, education, and family visits. They are severely isolated, with little to occupy them, and many are in mental distress.
So we're fundraising for creative activity packs which will include engaging articles
, crafts
activities to gift to visitors, stories to read to children over the phone
, creative challenges, puzzles, and more.
We'll send the packs to people who have been on a Good Vibrations music course in prisons across the country. Some of the content will relate to the music and Indonesian culture they experienced on the course, and other items will be just for them. We want to show prisoners that we know they are isolated, we are listening, and we care.
Last year, during the worst of lockdown, we sent activity packs into prisons for the first time. They were extremely well received by prisoners and prison staff, and led to some very creative responses:
- an invitation to write a blog for our Creative Justice series prompted an HMP Stoke Heath resident to respond. You can read BLs contribution here
- one recipient told us he'd really valued the origami and colouring mandalas
The pack contained many interesting items, especially the origami and the mandalas. I have now started to use some of the items to support others here, through the weekly meditation group I facilitate. It definitely helps others who are finding the solitude of the current situation difficult.
Each activity pack costs £5, so any donation you can give really will directly support Good Vibrations participants in prisons, and show them that people care. Thank you.
Good Vibrations aims to help prisoners, patients in secure hospitals, ex-prisoners and others in the community develop team-working, communications and other important life skills, through participating in gamelan (Indonesian percussion) workshops.
