Story
The GLO site sits within Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve, an area recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
It is recommended that young people engaged in the Scouting Programme should spend time working on outdoor and in adventure areas.
Outdoor Learning includes discovery, experimentation, learning about and connecting with the biodiversity of the Nature Reserve, and engaging in environmental and adventurous activities.
The current state of the site is inadequate for its purpose as a centre for outdoor learning/activities and residential experiences. Additionally the area suffers from a degree of vandalism which costs the Scout Association a considerable amount of money and effort to continuously make good.
Our Project Objectives:
- To enhance the biodiversity of the site by including additional terraced green areas.
- Provide a safer environment for young people and improve the perimeter security installations.
- Re-development of the historical site to educate users on the World Heritage value of the site.
- Provide an activity Centre of excellence whereby young people are encouraged to participate in activities designed to structure their development and improve confidence and resilience.
- At Scouts its all about helping young people to do their best therefore, we believe that widening the scope to schools and youth will provide a powerful, positive impact on young peoples academic achievement.
- As an inclusive organisition we intend to improve on site accessibility.
- The re-location of the Associations Headquarters to be based along the site entrance in order to provide and manage the necessary welfare, storage and training facilities.
- Aspire to obtain international accreditation for a SCENES (Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature, Environment and Sustainability)
