Following on from Grannys experience of caring for Great Granma while she suffered from vascular dementia and subsequently after Great Granma passed Granny decided she wanted to give something back to society especially after meeting and socialising with many patients and their families at the residential home where Great Granma and all those other families spent their last few years suffering very similar debilitating illnesses.

Granny being a member of the LGBTQ + community herself decided that this could be a personal way forward to set up a fundraiser to thank those who personally cared for Great Granma. As a result Gays Get Alzheimers Too (GGAT for short) which has now been set up with special thanks to the team at Newcastle University, Grannys Home town.

One such project at Newcastle University is developing a multi-parameter approach to defining brain tissue structure, organisation and several aspects of function. To allow effective and acceptable study of people with early dementia the University have developed new very rapid scanning techniques. These allow measurement of the six major parameters in the same patient. Understanding the relationship between these measurements will shed new light on disease progression of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia with the aim of improving diagnosis and management of the disease.
