Our Alder Hey Childrens Hospital challenge, has been organised directly by Alder Hey. It is supported through Baxi Heating UKs Charitable Trust, where Daniel works & Martin is a former employee - now of Smiths Enviromental Products.
Daniel: At the age of 3, our daughter, Maisie was diagnosed with a condition called Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). When my wife, Jill & I found out our little girl needed open heart surgery our world came crashing down.
Being diagnosed with ASD, meant that part of Maisie's upper chamber in her heart was missing. This causes an issue with the direction of blood flow and puts a large strain on, and potentially damages, other major organs.
The ASD resulted in Maisie undergoing 6 hours of open heart surgery and being placed on a heart bypass machine. Once the Doctors opened Maisie's chest, they said Maisie's heart was like a 'sponge' full of tiny holes. Those holes were closed up at the same time as the ASD procedure.
Alder Hey Childrens Hospital were so supportive all of the way through Maisie's diagnosis and treatment. They continued to support her until she had her perfect heart.
If Maisie hadn't had this surgery, by the time she would have reached 13 years old her heart & lungs would've been severely damaged and her life would be irrecoverably changed.
As a BIG thank you to the entire Alder Hey team, Maisie wanted to show her gratitude when she had turned 13. So earlier in 2019, she raised £1,147 for Alder Hey. She put her heart & lungs to the ultimate test, by climbing over 20,000 ft, up a variety of mountains in the UK...She is fantastic!
This encouraged me and my good friend Martin to demonstrate our support for Alder Hey Hospital and highlight the fantastic work they do every day. They continue to care for over 330,000 children, young people and their families, every year.
Martin: In December 2016 my fiancée took her own life, after battling mental illness for several years.
Becoming a lone parent of Ruben & Phoebe, 3 & 2 at the time and having my own personal battles, I became involved with raising funds and awareness for mental health charities over subsequent years, predominantly through physical challenges. During this difficult period, Daniel supported me and has been a great friend throughout.
I knew of Maisie's difficulty as a baby and the continued support Daniels family received from Alder Hey. More recently, I had followed Maisie's progress on her challenge to climb over 20,000ft around the peaks of the UK, raising money in support of Alder Hey.
Inspired by Maisie, Daniel and I searched for an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for the great work Alder Hey do. We found a challenge directly organised by Alder Hey; to raise £7500 between us, to trek over 50km and climb up 3250m, in part of the Himalayas, in North Central Nepal.
