Story
Support for the Ukrainian Down's syndrome community
In any situation of crisis or conflict, people who have Down's syndrome or other disabilities face a greater risk of violence, of being left behind, of death.
They will also have less access to safety, relief, and recovery support.
Women with disabilities are at increased risk of sexual violence.
Children with disabilities are more exposed to abuse and neglect.
The current situation in Ukraine is horrifying, full of uncertainty and changing swiftly.
We are setting up this appeal to gather funds to support people who have Down's syndrome in Ukraine and their families and carers.
We will distribute the money to recognized agencies who are working on the ground to care for and keep safe people who have Down's syndrome in Ukraine and in the refugee population to help them to build a better future.
If funds raised exceed the need then they will be used wherever the need is greatest.
Thank you to everyone who has given to our appeal for Ukraine. The response has been overwhelming! We are working directly with families in Ukraine and those who have fled to safety in Poland and surrounding countries. By working together with our friends at the European Down Syndrome Association and a consortium of Downs syndrome organisations in Poland, we are able to give practical support by way of humanitarian supplies and seek accommodation with host families outside Ukraine. Please continue to support the appeal, it is making a difference! I will keep you updated with the work that is going on.
3 May 2022 - Just a quick update on what is happening with the DSA Ukraine appeal:
We have been sending regular payments directly to Ukraine families through the Ukrainian Down Syndrome Organisation. Many of the families have run out of money because they are unable to work and some have lost everything in the bombardment leaving them totally dependent on support from others. Every month, we receive a report detailing exactly where the funds have been spent. There is no doubt that all the funds raised from our appeal are going directly Ukranian families on the ground.
We continue to support families from Ukraine who have fled to Poland. The biggest problem in Poland now is a lack of free accommodation because so many refugees are arriving every day. Some of the children and adults with Downs syndrome have been so traumatised by what they have seen and heard that they are find it a struggle to be able to move on. Many are in need of medical support. Our funds are helping to provide accommodation and a safe space in order to get the help that they need.
