Story
I've chosen to replicate a real journey of an escaped prisoner of war from the notorious prison camp of Colditz in Eastern Germany during the second world war. The Colditz story was prominent on the Television in the 1970's and made into a boardgame which my family still enjoy. Competition is fierce to make an escape in the game, so I've decided to play the do or die card (not literally) and do the real thing.
After an audacious escape from the prison castle, French man Pierre Mairesse-Lebrun stole a bicycle (that's the bit I'm not replicating) and cycled nearly 600 miles through enemy territory to reach safety in Ramsen, Switzerland. 19 prisoners eventually travelled this route to facilitate their escape which became known as the Singen Route.
I'm going to replicate the journey by travelling to Germany to stay in the Castle, which is now a youth hostel, and then make my way alone on an old style bicycle to Switzerland. Unsupported and living as simply as possible including wild camping, hopefully if not caught I''ll complete the journey in approximately 7 days.
I'm attempting whilst on the way to raise money for The Brick who help in supporting those at risk or transitioning through homelessness, financial hardship or crisis in the Wigan borough. The Brick is a charity close to my heart and I have worked and volunteered there for three and a half years. I have seen first-hand the positive impact the charity makes in the local community. If you can spare a few pounds to support, my fundraiser I would be very grateful. My challenge begins at 6am on 25th May!
