Chrysalis Secondary School in Northern Uganda is a school designed to enable children and youth to learn how they can improve the living standards of those living in rural areas in Northern Uganda.
Since the war in Northern Uganda 15 or so years ago, the area has never fully recovered but its people have the potential to transform the region into a modern and inspiring part of East Africa.
Some students at the school will learn how to be changemakers through the unique Butterfly training programme, which they will be taught alongside the Ugandan secondary school curriculum. The training includes the following topic areas:
1. World Citizenship
2. Creativity, vision development and problem-solving
3. Ethics and transparency
4. Project Management and Leadership
5. ICT and Social Media
Students will learn this during evenings and weekends, while they learn the Ugandan curriculum, which has been revised recently to be more practical in focus, during the weekdays.
The Chrysalis Secondary School will be a memorable place to study, with several unique aspects to the schooling:
It is essential that students are given the very best of tuition, using the most modern teaching methods and working with the most outstanding teachers. We are linking with educationalists around the world to deliver this vision.
Omoro is an area where girls have suffered during the lockdown period and many have become pregnant while waiting to return to school, having been married off by their parents. DUring this period Chrysalis has been working hard to empower girls, through offering assertiveness training, confidence-building and training in entrepreneurial skills. This empowerment will carry through the school, where we have a dynamic team that is focused on ensuring that girls are retained at school, perform well academically and are able to reach their potential.
We have a 400m track at the school, together with a basketball and netball court. There is also space for football and other sports. We have a dedicated and well-equipped lab and library and hope to build a complete science block this year.
We are partnering with organisations to deliver programming tuition to all students and we will teach electronics to encourage girls and boys into engineering careers.
Agriculture is a critical skill for many in Northern Uganda, which has fertile land. We have agricultural experts who will be there to teach our students but also local children, who, while they are still at Primary School, will learn how to raise money for their secondary school tuition at Chrysalis. There will be many opportunities for students to practise all of the practical skills needed for agriculture on the land owned by the school.
We at Chrysalis have Uganda's largest library of board games, that we have shipped over the last ten years. We've also run the Uganda Village Boardgame Convention since 2017 and the school will be a host for this in 2022. Children attending the school will be encouraged to play boardgames, read books, research on the internet and much more. Chrysalis is working with Brass4Africa and students will have an opportunity to learn a musical instrument and take bart in the school brass band.
There will be clubs for reading, boardgaming, debating, wildlife, climate change and much more.
There are a number of ways that you can sponsor children at the Chrysalis Secondary School, to suit every pocket. Some photos of the children to be sponsored are below.
To sponsor the schooling and training of a young social entrepreneur, then you can set up a monthly payment at Justgiving for £45/month (about US$65 per month) at this link. For the first payment you will need to pay for uniform at £35 (about US$50) as a one off. You can select either a boy or a girl and you will be able to see a photograph and Skype or Zoom with the student you are sponsoring while they are attending the school. If you wish, you can become more involved in their projects and ideas, as they develop their skills and projects.
For £22.50/month (about US$32.50 per month), we will try to connect you to another sponsor who wishes to sponsor a member of the school and we will ask you to share the costs. When you start the sponsorship, you will most likely be asked as a "one off" to pay £17.50 (about US$25) to cover the costs of uniform. In all other ways, this works just the same as a full sponsorship (see above). If you wish, you can jointly sponsor with a friend.
If you would like to be a part of a group that tries to sponsor as many children as possible, then you can join our sponsorship syndicate. We have set up a Facebook group that will include news about the children sponsored by the syndicate and children will also be invited to post in this group about their achievements and activities that they have led or participated in. All we ask is that you set up a regular payment of your choice. A regular payment is important, as it will enable us to predict how many children we can sponsor through this route. We will prioritise those children who show leadership or who have a particular talent, such as musicianship, artistic ability or athletics.
Once you have chosen your option click on GIVE NOW at the top of this page. Make sure to click on the Monthly Payment Option.
While we welcome our sponsored children liaising with our Butterfly Project group members, as it is part of their communication training. You will be requested to share your communications with a member of staff at the Chrysalis School. We take the safety of the children on our projects very seriously whether in person in Uganda or on-line.
