Story

What is Cape2Killi?

On the 29th March 2023, Connected Planet ambassador, Joseph Makowa, aka The Travel Mufasa is setting off on the challenge of a lifetime. Starting in Cape Town, South Africa, Joseph will be trekking 6,000km across 5 Southern African countries, finishing off on the rooftop of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, some 6 months later.

Joseph will be doing this without any support vehicle in place, carrying nothing but his tent, supplies and food on his back. He will travel through towns and villages, cities and wilderness, meeting many communities and experiencing incredible wildlife along the way.

Why Cape2Kili?

After Covid-19 shut his travel company down, Joseph took it upon himself to walk through his home country of Zimbabwe, experiencing his beautiful land life never before. Joseph covered a staggering 1,500km in just 35 days, becoming the first person to ever walk around Zimbabwe.

On route, Joseph met many children, the vast majority of whom had very little experience of the world outside of their village. They had no ambitions or dreams and practically no understanding of the wonders of the natural world they lived so close to.

Joseph set up the Cape2Kili challenge to give African children the opportunity to connect with the world and to experience the wonderful wildlife that they live so close to, yet have very little access to outside of the human-wildlife conflict issue.

What we want to achieve?

Both on the walk, and after it, the aim of Cape2Kili is to give African children the chance to see the world and connect to the iconic wildlife that they live alongside. Going on a game drive shouldn't be something only tourists can access. Taking children into their local National Park or Wildlife Reserve from an early age, and building that connection to wildlife, can only be a positive thing for the long-term conservation of Africa's wildlife. The game drives of today build the conservationists of tomorrow.

We are working closely with organisations based along Joseph's route, so that he can take children into their local National Park and experience the wildlife like never before. For the vast majority, this will be their first time into their local wildlife areas.

In addition, the funds raised from Cape2Kili will be used to give African children an opportunity to see a world outside of their village, and to give them an understanding of the bigger picture. We will be supporting the organisations that Joseph visits along the way, on an on-going basis, to ensure that many children can visit and connect with wildlife. We shall also be supporting our existing partners across Africa, in a bid to provide as many children with these life-changing opportunities as possible.

Be a part of Cape2Kili today and support Joseph's epic challenge. The impact of this walk, we know, will ripple on for generations to come. Any donation is wholeheartedly appreciated, however big or small - it will make a huge difference overall.

We thank you.
