Story
The Dakatcha Woodland in Kenya's Coast Province is a beautiful mosaic of forest, woodlands and grassland. It is also home to Golden-rumped Elephant-shrew as well as the tiny Sokoke Scops Owl, both of which are classified as Globally Endangered and exist only in remnants of the dry coastal forest that originally stretched from Somalia to Mozambique. However, Dakatcha is undergoing rapid change which threatens the existence of its precious habitats and wildlife. Illegal logging, charcoal burning, and unmanaged pineapple plantation expansion destroy and degrade the unique forest habitat. In response to this, A Rocha Kenya is buying land to create the A Rocha Dakatcha Nature Reserve and thus protect the elephant-shrew and scops owl.
Triple your donation - help us buy more forest before it is destroyed. We have a generous donor who has offered to give £2 for every £1 donated. Your donation to purchase one acre (at £140 an acre) will therefore mean that three acres will be protected!
The other key need for the Conservation Action Fund is to pay for the eco-bursaries and associated conservation activities for our 2020 intake of ASSETS (Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Eco-Tourism Scheme ). Were delighted that we have been able to support over 660 students so far through secondary school and given them hope and a future. Please join us to support another 100 students through 2020.
