Story
Thank you so much for visiting our emergency fundraising page. We are so grateful that you have taken the time to consider donating, when there is so much to concern us in the world.
We are currently struggling to provide the services that spinally injured people need. It costs over £100,000 a month for Aspire to support people with spinal cord injuries to ensure they can live independent lives, and, as with many businesses in the UK, Aspire's income has been impacted as a result of the current Coronavirus outbreak. We need your help to continue our work. Every donation you make will help us help someone with an injury who is struggling in these uncertain times. It will also allow us to get ready to re-launch our fabulous and much loved events when restrictions are lifted.
We will use these donations very carefully and you can be sure that the money that you give at this time will have a positive impact on someone's life, like Sharooti:
Sharooti became paralysed when a hospital procedure went wrong.
I was admitted into hospital and have not gone home since. It's actually a year today since I was last home.
Aspire showed me how to use SmartNav, which is basically using my head to direct the mouse on my laptop, Dragon, which allows me to speak into the laptop and it follows my instructions, and Eyegaze, which uses my eye movement to control the mouse.
I am now in a nursing home whilst I wait for my house to be adapted. As soon as I get up, after getting dressed and all dolled up like I'm going outside, I go downstairs along with my laptop and SmartNav. Using Skype, I am able to call home and ask about my kids and find out what's going on. I also have family in Hong Kong, so it's really important to me that we can keep in touch.
If it doesn't work, I'm like, 'What am I going to do?' It's the only way I communicate with family and friends.
When I first arrived, I watched TV for a month whilst I waited for the kit to arrive. The first few weeks were so difficult for me without the use of the laptop. There's no-one here to really have a good chat with, it gets boring.
The training from Aspire was so helpful at that moment. It's been so helpful for me since I've come here. It keeps me busy.
