Story
This painting was probably commissioned by Christopher Knywett of Ashwellthorpe in circa 1520, likely for private devotion. The centre panel of this stunning triptych depicts the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary set in a dreamy landscape, with the wings showing kneeling Christopher and his wife Catherine on either side. Theres more than meets the eye, as this painting tells a deeper story of Norfolks connection to mainland Europe through cultural and trading connections with Flanders.
