Story

Age UK Norfolk Turns 75!

This year we are celebrating 75 years of supporting older people in Norfolk with our vital services. From launching in the post war years to being there for older people throughout the pandemic, we have remained committed to making Norfolk a great place to grow older.

Now, we want to celebrate our special anniversary by raising funds to kickstart our Age Friendly Communities project, ensuring our communities in Norfolk are places where people of all ages can live healthy and active lives.

Raising Funds for Age Friendly Communities

We know from our experience working with older people across our county that there are certain barriers which can limit how included and connected older people feel in their own communities.

We are committed to making Norfolk a great place to grow older and want to use our anniversary year as a platform to raise funds to kickstart our age friendly community initiative. This will enable us to become much more visible in local communities, including more one-to-one services, and to start building connections with local authorities, businesses and other organisations so that we can all work together with older residents to improve our communities.

What is an Age Friendly Community?

Age-friendly communities are places where people of all ages can live healthy and active lives. These places make it possible for people to continue to stay in their homes, participate in the activities that they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.

Key features of an age-friendly community include good transport, outdoor spaces, volunteering and employment opportunities, leisure and community services.

Our History

Age UK Norfolk was established in 1947 as the Norfolk Old Peoples Welfare Committee to provide basic help and assistance to older people during the aftermath of the Second World War and to provide a voice for their rights and dignity. It grew out of the many clubs and groups organised for and run by older people throughout the County.

In the 1970s, the Norfolk Old Peoples Welfare Committee was renamed Age Concern Norfolk and the first paid staff were employed to manage the increasing work of the organisation.

In 2000 the Charity became a charitable organisation limited by guarantee and in July 2000, organisations sharing the name Age Concern came together to work in a federation; a structure that reflected independence and autonomy but also interdependence.

In 2009 Age Concern England and Help the Aged joined together to create a new national charity - Age UK - and in 2010 Age Concern Norfolk signed a Brand Partner agreement with Age UK and changed its operating name to Age UK Norfolk.
