Story
Take part in 2,800 Squats in February for young people with cancer.
Every day, seven young people ages 13-24 hear the words you have cancer, They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through it. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to meeting this vital need so no young person faces cancer alone.
Amanda, who is taking part in the 2,800 Squats in February challenge again this year with her daughters, shared with us why she is taking part.
Her son Ashleigh was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma in 2010 and was treated on the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Birmingham. He relapsed in 2018 and sadly passed away that year.
“Ashleigh was just 19 when he was told he had a tumour the size of a golf ball on his cerebellum. We were lucky the first time round, and Ash had chemotherapy and radiotherapy on a Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the QE. Teenage Cancer Trust was absolutely amazing. Ash is one of seven children and the staff at Teenage Cancer Trust supported the whole family. They made sure that the hospital environment was not scary.
"Ashleigh was having six-month scans and they picked up some nodules when he was 26. The next scan showed that it had metastasized and was in his spine. This time round he wasn’t as lucky as he had the group 4 strain and there was nothing that could be done for him. Ash was told that he only had two weeks to live. He got married within that time. He died in his home with his wife and family around him."
