Story
Addiction & Recovery
Addiction affects people from every walk of life and the reasons behind it are complex - its roots often lie in traumatic childhood and life experiences. Recovering from dependence on drugs or alcohol is a long term process and often requires rebuilding a life from scratch. Stopping or reducing using substances or drinking is usually not the biggest issue – the real challenge for individuals lies in their sustaining this in the long term and repairing the devastating consequences of their substance use. Without the right support people return to drinking or using and the cycle of devastation starts again.
Double Impact is a unique service which helps people in recovery to deal with all the issues they face, not just their substance use, and to rebuild their lives. We connect recovering people into educational groups and accredited courses to build self-esteem and employment skills, help with practical issues like housing and benefits, and offer volunteering and mentoring schemes; most importantly, we connect them people with a supportive recovery community, through which they can support and inspire each other and build a new social network which supports their life changes.
25 Years of Recovery
25 years ago, Double Impact embarked on its journey to support individuals affected by drug and alcohol addiction,
From humble beginnings in a room within the Nottingham YMCA, the organisation has grown to employ over 70 members of staff, supporting just under 1800 people in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire each year. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our supporters, staff, and volunteers, we have helped countless people to overcome addiction, rebuild their lives, and contribute to their communities.
Despite this growth, the original ethos of listening and responding to people with lived experience of addiction, is still at the heart of the charity; it’s this ongoing collaboration, together with the ‘double impact’ of connecting people with their own strengths and a supportive community, which enables people to achieve their full potential. Most importantly, our work with people restores their hope, dignity, confidence and purpose, as well as peace of mind to their loved ones.
How You Can Help
We need your help to raise awareness and funds to help people suffering from addictions; together we can combat the stigma which still surrounds it and provide better opportunities, for example through providing childcare, counselling and safe social activities to support recovery.

I'd never done any kind of running before - training for and then taking part in the Robin Hood Half for Double Impact was a brilliant experience - I've continued to run regularly just to keep fit and I'm really grateful for this. if I can do it, you can too!"
