Story
Jude presented to us as he was just about to be discharged from the Whiteleaf centre (a local mental health support unit) but had no fixed address to be discharged to. Although they had family within the area, the family were unable to accommodate them.
Jude was not considered as priority need by the council and so could not be placed in temporary accommodation. When they came to AHAG for an assessment Charlotte was able to help Judas explore all their housing options. Jude and their family felt that private renting would not be suitable as Jude was not yet receiving any benefits and had no other form of income.
Charlotte discussed the benefits of supported accommodation and together they completed referrals to local accommodation units that would suit their current needs. Soon after this, the Whiteleaf centre discharged Jude, although he still had no where to live. Understandably this was distressing news for them and their family.
Whilst the supported accommodation referrals had been completed, there can be a long waitlist, and so Jude unfortunately had to sleep in a car, as they had nowhere else to stay.
After a few weeks, we finally heard back from one of the supported accommodation schemes, who interviewed Jude and accepted them into their scheme. Jude was very grateful for the work AHAG had done, and we are so happy to see them have a place to live with the support they will benefit from.
Jude’s story is just one example of #homelessness. Our data shows that Jude is 1 of *254 individuals who courageously shared with us that they had a mental health issue.
