Story
Our annual STEPS fundraiser raises money to fight poverty in Steuben County. Through our Turning Point program, we help individuals and families in Steuben County with rent and mortgage assistance, food, basic needs including clothing, diapers, household items and more. We serve all people seeking help in a safe, welcoming and comforting environment that feels like being home.
We invite you to read one story on how Turning Point had a "transformative" impact right here in our community...
We have a gentleman who uses our pantry twice per month. He always has specific requests for certain types of food or items. Through conversations with him it was discovered that his wife is currently battling cancer. Due to the treatment, she has lost her appetite for most food and had become severely malnourished. They are on a fixed income and he doesn't have the steady means to buy the types of food she would eat. Thanks to community partnership with Wegmans, Walmart, Aldi, and The Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Turning Point often has these items in stock. She will eat most baked goods and sweets along with ensure and other dietary supplements. He arrived at Turning Point this morning to tell us that his wife is no longer considered malnourished and that she has gained healthy weight since he started utilizing our pantry. He reported that the money he saved from not needing to buy specialty goods has allowed him to buy her items to help her stay comfortable. (new pillows etc.) It is very nice to see the pantry make a positive impact in someone's life and to know that these community partnerships are all working together to ease the pressure on individuals in the community.
