Now in its 7th year, The Marathon of Afghanistan is one of the most remarkable marathons in the world. It's the only international marathon in the country and as a result, the race has received significant media attention. Free to Run has been involved with the race from the start, helping to increase the number of women and girls in both the 10K and full marathon.

This race symbolizes the local and international efforts in the region to promote sports for everyone. The marathon will take place in the Bamian province, amidst the mountains of the Hindu Kush in central Afghanistan. This astonishingly beautiful valley, a UNESCO world heritage site, is recognized as one of the safest provinces in the country.

Charity participants in the 2021 Marathon of Afghanistan are fundraising to support the mission of Free to Run as part of their entry into the race. They will travel to Afghanistan and run alongside the courageous women of Afghanistan who, despite myriad challenges around them, participate in sport and running.
