“As a youngster I did not have enough sight to ride a bike. I now have no sight at all. My first ride was very scary. However, I persevered. Now I really enjoy it and am able to cycle 40 miles. Apart from the exhilarating feeling of freedom, it is so good for my mental and physical health. I am so glad I was encouraged to join the group.” – Ann
For five years VIE Velo has enabled visually impaired and sighted people to ride tandems together, sharing the joy of the ride and making new friendships.
“Being a tandem pilot for VIE Velo brings me joy. I am exercising, spending time outdoors and getting to know wonderful people. I find it incredibly rewarding and I am happy for days after a ride.” – Carmen
We have found that e-tandems enable even more people to ride with us. We are fundraising towards the purchase of a further e-tandem.
“I have enjoyed cycling all my life. However, my severe sight loss prevents me from safe solo cycling. The VIE Velo charity enables me to enjoy cycling again. VIE Velo is more than just the enjoyment of cycling. The lunchtime cafe stops are a great chance to catch up and support other members with sight loss.” – Eddie
100km will be the furthest many of us have ever ridden. It will be a great challenge, and also a celebration of how far we have come as individuals and as a group.
Volunteering with VIE Velo is transformational! It provides an amazing "outside opportunity" for people with a sight impairment to get out there in the Lothians and explore our roads and lanes whilst keeping fit and meeting new people every time - what a great day to be had by all!” – Maryrose
