Story
Thanks for visiting my page, my name is Cameron I am 14 years old and attend Westleigh High School,Leigh,Wigan.
I hope you can find time to read my story so far.................................
5 years ago when I was just 9 years old I waved goodbye to my mum, dad and sister Danielle as I set off on a school skiing trip to Pila in Italy. Little did I know that 3 and a half days into the holiday my mum and dad would receive the phone call that every parent dreads................................I had fallen 30-40 ft out of a ski lift landing on compacted ice !!!!!
Despite wanting to get back up and start skiing again I was air lifted off the mountain and taken to hospital.............
I had dislocated both my ankles, broke both my legs my left arm and had a massive bump on my head.... ouch!!!!
Being very brave and without any anaesthetic my ankles were manipulated back and this was followed by an emergency operation to pin and wire my limbs!!
My teachers stayed with me until my mum and dad came the next daybut it was awful. When they arrived I couldn't speak to them I just gave my mum a big cuddle and cried ! I had plaster everywhere !
After 3 days we came back to England in a tiny aeroplane and spent 2 more days in Wigan Infirmary before I came home to my makeshift bedroom in the dining room. I had walkie talkies to let mum and dad know when I needed the loo!!! My best friend Lewis spent loads of time with me.
But I was determined not to let my accident get the better of me so the week after I went back to school in my wheelchair and after 6 weeks I had my pins and wires removed and my plaster off. Then it was all systems go and back on my feet the next day with my physio Jimmy. Just 2 weeks later I defied all expectations and walked down the aisle at my godmothers wedding to do a reading.
I am a very sporty person and I found it very frustrating not being able to play my sports, but with determination, encouragement and custom made training programmes my cricket coach Tim McKiernan, Karate sensai Gary Foxwell and football coach my dad Howard I was soon back on my feet.
It made me realise how lucky I had been but also how difficult it must be for disabled people to play sports. With this in mind I ask my mum to help me raise for some specialised sports equipment.
We organised a sponsored walk round our local athletics track. I spent all my summer holidays hand writing letters to my favourite celebrities Man Utd FC, Peter Kay, David Beckham, Amir Khan, Ant and Dec, Andrew Flintoff, Bumble the cricket commentator to name a few but they must have all been busy because none of them came!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway we were joined by over 150 family and friends, teachers, my ski instructor Danny, Ruth from the rescue team, Sven Goran Erickson look a like and our local mayor. My sister and her friends did some dancing and Rising Sun and me did a karate demonstration !!! Along with a massive raffle with over 100 prizes including signed Premiership balls and shirts, signed Coronation Street scripts, mountain bikes etc etc we raised a massive £6000 for the Wigan Disability Sports Forum. I couldn't believe it!!!!!!!!!!! I got such a buzz from it.
This was just the start of my charity work and there was no stopping me. Over the last 5 years I have done pantomine for our local childrens hospice Derian House, abseiled down hotels for breast cancer research, D.I.A.S, Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Booth Hall Burns Unit, I have run the Sport Relief mile twice plus others and in total I have raised just short of £10 000.
My latest venture is a 140ft free fall abseil down the North Stand of my beloved Manchester Utd onto the hallowed turf!!! This time it's for CYSTIC FIBROSIS a life threatening disease. Its on Sunday 28 March 2010.
I am an active member of Leigh cricket club, Hindley Town Football club, Westleigh basketball club and Rising sun Karate club where I have recently gained my 2nd dan black belt.
I also do volunteer coaching with the Wigan Sports Development Unit which I absolutely love. I have recently been working with a group of disabled children which I find extremely rewarding.
18 months ago I received a very rare GOLD Blue Peter badge for my bravery and charity work which I am really proud off.
I have made a full recovery from my injuries and realise how lucky I have been which has given me the incentive to help
others.
Thanks to everyone for taking time to read my story and hope it inspires you to donate no matter how big or small to this very worthy charity - CYSTIC FIBROSIS
My aim is £1000 but a really hope I can topple this.
Yours hopefully
Cameron Foster
