About Cafe JJ
Café JJ has been running since 2007 and was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016. By providing training and support in catering and customer service, Café JJ supports a team of disabled people to run a community café. Support to gain appropriate qualifications is also provided. The team of disabled people produce good quality low cost food and a friendly eating place in Darlington. Barriers between disabled and non-disabled people (who come in as customers) are broken down enabling disabled people to show they can contribute to society by being hardworking volunteers who have skills. By having a constructive, meaningful day activity, members of the disabled team gain confidence and with having structure to their week, the risk of loneliness and isolation is reduced. Friendships are formed between disabled team members and customers who and their wellbeing improves with the improvement in their social lives.
