About The Benevolent Society of St Patrick (1783)
We are a registered charity (E&W 214824) that provides grants to distressed people who are Irish, or of Irish descent, and who live in Greater London.
The grants are small, are not available from other sources, but make a substantial difference to the lives of the recipients. They may help pay for items of clothing or footwear, essential household items, emergency support, funeral expenses, and provision of documents such as passports to enable access to other support.
The Society was formed in 1783 to assist the Irish poor in London, without consideration of “religion, sect or party”. In 1820, the Society opened its own non-denominational schools in Lambeth. Sadly, this sort of assistance is as necessary in the 21st century as it was in the 18th century.
Trusted Assessors identify greatest need. We derive our income from a small capital sum, charitable trusts and private benefactors. The Society’s Annual Report and Accounts are published on the Charity Commission website.
There is an unremitting call on our limited resources and donations are always welcome.
