Story
On 30th September, myself, my crazy cousin Samantha Somerset- Butler, and my super Spire Wellesley friends, Fiona Campbell and Jackie Hanan, will be 'braving the shave' in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month CCAM and in memory of my son, Finn, whom we very sadly lost to childhood cancer in June 2018. We will be fundraising for our wonderful local children’s cancer charity, Gold Geese, who work extremely hard to provide support to all children and families, in the Southend area, with a childhood cancer diagnosis.
Super special thanks to Sam, Fiona and Jackie for agreeing to take part. For me, it’s personal, and after helplessly, watching our little Finn, endure the horrors of all that a childhood cancer diagnosis brings, losing my hair is a very small sacrifice. Hair loss is, sadly, just one of the awful side effects of chemotherapy that causes huge anxiety in our children and is something that Finn struggled with. However, for Sam, Fiona and Jackie, it’s purely a selfless act and I think you’re both absolutely amazeballs!
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (#CCAM) takes place in September each year. The internationally recognised symbol for childhood cancer is the gold ribbon and campaigners and supporters of the campaign wear the gold ribbon to raise awareness and provide education around recognising the symptoms of childhood cancers.
Spotting cancer in children and young people can be difficult. This is because cancer symptoms in children can be vague and similar to common childhood illnesses making it difficult to spot. Delays in diagnosis can mean that cancer has grown bigger or spread around the body, meaning treatments are less effective. One in every five children diagnosed with cancer will die of this disease. Early diagnosis can result in softer treatment options for our children, minimising long term health issues and, ultimately, can save lives.
