Story
Helen had finally found the job she wanted in July 2019 working in international development for BRAC, particularly aiming at helping young women improve their lives.
After the funeral in 2020 we asked people to donate to this collection for BRAC with the aim of setting up a project in Helen’s name. Thank you to all who donated.
Lewis Temple, Helen’s Chief Executive at BRAC UK, wrote in his memorial note, “Though Helen was only with BRAC for a short time, she was a hugely respected and popular member of the team with an outstanding work ethic and a relentlessly positive attitude. Working in international development and joining BRAC was her dream job as it enabled her to play a part in programmes helping so many people”.
In early 2022 BRAC UK used the funds to set up the Helen Turner International Development Internship which will become an annual ten-week paid internship. Given BRAC’s ethos, they wanted to offer the role to someone who wouldn’t normally have had the chance of doing an internship if it was unpaid. We felt this was something Helen would have been proud to have in her name, and should be something that more charities undertake to broaden the pool from which they recruit staff. The first recipient of the internship in the summer of 2022 was Nancy Festus. Nancy has now written a report of her time at BRAC UK which is available to read on the BRAC UK website - Nancy Festus BRAC Blog.
