A team of unlikely fundraisers from West Cornwall pushed themselves to the limit recently, undertaking an epic bike ride to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson's UK. The group of 17 riders and 4 support crew travelled from Paddington station in London to Penzance Station over six gruelling days. Shadowing the rail route to the South West, and stopping at many of the stations en-route, the group of friends covered over 4oo miles.
Kevin Godden, one of the Bordercross crew, was diagnosed with the condition ten years ago, aged just 34. Explaining why the team chose to support Parkinson's UK, he said "I was delighted to take the chance to increase awareness and understanding of this debilitating condition. It's not just a disease affecting the elderly, and as with many complex illnesses, it affects everyone in different ways."
"Parkinson's UK do a great job supporting those living with the condition as well as taking a leading role in the search for a cure. It's great to think the money we have raised will in some small way contribute to this great work which gives us all hope."
The staff of Parkinson's UK, led by Director of Fundraising Paul Jackson-Clark, braved wet and windy conditions to see off the cyclists, and six days later the group returned to their hometown of St Just-in-Penwith to a great reception. A charity BBQ and auction added to the funds raised. At the time of writing, the total raised stands at £8,600. With sponsor money and collecting cans still to be collected in, the team are confident of exceeding their £10,000 target.
"We have been genuinely humbled by the support and generosity of everyone in our amazing community and every new friend we made along the way", Kevin said.
"We would like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way, from putting us up along the way, to contributing to the auction, to donating. The response has been phenomenal."
