We held our charity auction last week which was a complete success. Chief Operating Officer, Bryan Vickery, proved to be a very slick auctioneer for a first-timer. Items included VIP tickets to a Manchester United game, Apple iPad, a designer chair and a cricket bat signed by the England team. We raised over £2000, thanks to all those who bid on items.

We're continuing in our quest to raise £10k for Computer Aid. Next month we'll be hosting a charity auction as part of our annual research awards / 10th anniversary reception. Items include an iPad, a designer chair, tickets to the War of the Worlds show at the 02 and some abstract paintings lovingly created by our very own management team.

We're slowly edging towards our target. Inspired by our German parent company, Springer, we recently held a Christmas market selling anything and everything from handmade chocolates, second-hand books and jewellery.

BioMed Central's staff have been busy fundraising
through monthly coffee mornings, a pub quiz, skydiving, a live music gig, a wine-tasting evening, raffles
and a sweepstakes. Four members of the editorial team will be joining
Computer Aid on a cycling tour around Chile this September to help us
reach our target.
Background
As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting open access in the developing world, BioMed Central has teamed up with Computer Aid to support research in Africa. We have chosen to support Kenyatta University in Nairobi to help local scientists to conduct vital research directly relevant to local problems in one of the poorest parts of Africa. We aim to raise £10,760 in order to provide a container of 225 PCs to the university – enough to give all research departments their own dedicated suite of computers.
How you can help
If you'd like to help us reach our target of £10,760, simply make a donation via this page. It's quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor this project: Computer Aid International gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
