Job done! New World Record pending confirmation and lots of paperwork!
September 11th 2016, that's my provisional date for attempting to beat the 12 hour vertical metres climbed world record. Same course as last time in Montchavin, a 1.5km climb that rises 118 metres. Lots more info to follow....................
August 18-20 I will attempt to beat the World Record for the most vertical metres climbed on a bike in a 48 hour period.
The current record is held by Jacob Zurl from Austria who managed to climb 28789 metres in 2011.
There are strict rules on the record attempt, it has to be series of repeats of the same climb. My attempt will take place on a 1.6km section of the climb up to the ski station of Montchavin, Savoie, France. I'm in the process of establishing the official altitudes of the start and finish point but it looks like I'll need to ride up and down it around 258 times to beat the record!
This is going to be a seriously major challenge for me and one that will be right on the margins of what I'm capable of. As well as being a huge physical challenge it will be a big mental battle too, riding up and down the same stretch of road for 48 hours. Donations to my chosen charity are obviously very welcome but support at the event itself would be massively appreciated too. Anyone who can ride with me for a few climbs and keep me awake and entertained would be fantastic, I promise it won't be fast! Volunteers will be needed at various time during the event too to help with timing, videoing, feeding, cheering, lighting and lots of other jobs!
As well as updates here, there will be more information on the Facebook page I've set up for the event:

Update July 11
Training going well for my attempt, 7000 very hilly kms in the legs over the spring and early summer so as fit as I can be. Racing tomorrow, then Etape du Tour next week. Just need to stay healthy and strong for one more month!
Update August 18
One week to go and feeling very fit, strong and light. All the riding I've done over the last few months has got me into good shape but it's still hard to prepare properly for 48 hours non stop. I keep doing the maths on this project and whichever way I look at it it's going to be very, very hard. I've got no doubt I can keep going for the 48 hours, my concern is whether I can keep to the schedule and beat the record. One thing's for sure, the more money this thing makes the more motivated I'll be to get this job done
